Delayed marriages were common in the early midwest. The traveling minister
only came around occasionally so many couples would "jump over the broom" to
indicate their intention to live together as man and wife. When the minister
arrived there would be a group marriage. As an aside I have never been able
to quite envision the "jumping over a broom" ceremony. Did they lay the broom
on the ground; both jump together or separately etc-Dale
