To Richard and others,

You may want to check out a shareware utility called JBMail, which you
can use in addition to your usual email program.

http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/trialware/jbmail.html

Partial description:

"JBMail is a unique POP3 mail reader which gives you direct access to
your mailbox. View, preview, delete, save, print, retrieve attachments, or
delete junk mail. JBMail gives you fast access to your mail, because it
lets you manipulate e-mails without having to first download them. With
its junk mail filtering, it's an excellent way to kill large amounts of spam.
'Purge' and 'partial' access modes let you get into very full mailboxes.
You can also compose mail or reply to messages in your inbox, and
JBMail will send them immediately." ...

"Nearly every e-mail client on the market works the same way: it first
downloads all the mail from a mail server, then lets the user manipulate
the messages. However, the POP3 protocol used world-wide also
supports a different method: e-mails can be directly deleted from servers,
or previewed, without first being downloaded. And that is what JBMail lets
you do."

"If you receive large amounts of mail or have multiple mailboxes to
check, you have probably noticed by now the enormous amount of time
you are wasting when you first download, then 'clean' up your mail.
JBMail lets you first clean your mail, then download."

Two comments:

First, this won't work for AOL users, because AOL uses a proprietary
email system.

Second, I haven't used JBMail myself, because Pegasus Mail already
includes a "selective mail download" feature, email filtering, and more.
IMO, Outlook is way too vulnerable to viruses and worms. (PegMail is
free and comes in Windows, Mac, and DOS flavors; see
http://www.pmail.com/)

Hope this helps,
