Rae Jean - The 2001 edition of The Gregg Reference Manual says that only
long quotations "that will make four more more lines may be handled in one
of the following ways" . . . the preferred style is to single space the
extract and indent it a half inch from EACH side margin (something which you
can't do in TMG, i.e., you can't jockey the right margin without doing so in
your word processor) and leave a blank line above and below the extract. Do
not use quotation marks as the indention replaces the quotation marks. (The
details on the other methods are far too complicated and indention is the
preferred style, so I have omitted the other choices. They are found on p.
71 of the book, if you are interested.)
In legal writing a quotation is idented if it is 50 or more words. I have
actually seen people counting the words in legal writing not realizing that
a "physical" word is not the same as a "word" as used in typing conventions.
A "typing" word is 5 keystrokes including the space following it.
Therefore, the word "therefore" and the comma that follows it in this very
sentence count as 2 words, not one. Using a 10 point monospaced font, a
6-1/2 inch line (1-inch side margins) yields 13 "words" per line.
