It is my understanding from talking to LDS members that when the LDS does a work
like the 1880 census they have 2-3 people working independently on transcribing
the census info. (That is 2-3 people working on a certain section--it actually
included many more volunteers than that). They then cross check the info
between these people and if any differences they are then rechecked and the
differences resolved. Being human nothing we do is perfect but I would be
willing to say that these extractions are probably pretty accurate. Personally,
after finding someone on these CD's I would still go after an original copy of
the page in question.
