After spending several months looking at digital cameras I decided on the
Olympus 2040z a 2.3 mp camera. Why? Because in all my research I felt it
fit my needs the best. It ranked as the best picture quality for 5X7s or
smaller print size than ANY camera and tied many 3.1 MP cameras at 8X10 in
Consumers Reports (please, I'm not saying Consumers Reports is a photo
expert but they at least do some good comparisons I feel). I read hundreds
of articles and reviews on many cameras. So for what I wanted this fit the
bill, I still have my 35 mm if I want to take a bigger picture. One thing
about buying "bigger" cameras, 3.1 or larger, is several articles discussed
that at the smaller size pictures, many cameras had a "muddling" of colors.
I'm not saying to not get these but if you aren't planning on taking bigger
than 5X7s you may not need it.
Finally I just got the camera ($375 shipped to my door through mysimon.com)
yesterday and I am having a field day. It is really FUN! I can even do a 5
minute movie with it... I want to use it for taking headstones so I have
been trying taking some pictures in my basement with just a couple of lights
on with no flash, I was amazed at how well it took pictures. I also took
some pictures of magazine articles for tests and they turned out very clear.
So go out an buy one, don't just buy a 3.1 mp or even the new 4.0 mp cameras
just because they have more megapixals, decide what you are going to use it
for and buy for that reason. But buy one, if you like toys ;-) your love
it!
just my 2-cents...
