Yeah, I think you're trying to make it too complicated. <g> A careful system
of source abbreviations may accomplish much of what you're seeking. For
example, I have many of my sources grouped geographically:

[State] [County] [Source Type] [Title]
VA Culpeper Deed Bk. A
VA Culpeper Will Bk. J
VA Fauquier Death Reg. 1
VA Fauquier Deed Bk. Z
VA Fauquier Will Bk. 14
NY State Census 1855
etc.

Others are grouped by type of record:

[Record Abbreviation] [Descriptor]
BIB [Bible] Hume, Cassie (Schmid) [Original owner]
BIB Sutphin, Minnie
NEWS [Newspaper] Fred'bg Star [Name of paper] 1845 Jan 13 [Date]
NEWS Ly'bg News-Advance 1955 Apr 21
OBIT [Obituary] Hume, Cassie (Schmid) [Deceased]
OBIT Hume, Louis

I've found that this scheme can be adapted to almost any kind of record.

Hope this helps,
