A guru I'm not but do have a suggestions. Why don't you post a message in
Microsoft's Word newsgroup? I have posted over there several times and have
always gotten great help. I have seen postings from others getting the Big
Bad Blue screen in Word. The illegal operation message does appear on blue
screen doesn't it? Anyways the newsgroup is:
microsoft.public.word.application.errors
If you are using one of the MS E-mail programs, MS Outlook Express has IE's
newsgroups. Netscape browser has the newsgroup capabilities built in under
Communicator > Newsgroups. Orrr you can get to the newsgroup, to all MS
newsgroups, via:
http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp?icp=GSS&slcid=us
Scroll down the left hand column to Office > Word. The first one under Word
is the application errors. You can subscribe from that site.

I would think??, if the Dell came with Word 2000 preinstalled then I would
jump up and down and scream and holler with Dell Support. Nowwww, many
computer companies' support staff manning phones only read off a list of
generic solutions. Some of them are not honest-to-goodness techics. I've
heard of folks screaming and yelling and asking for a manager, until a
computer company's support finally gives in just to get the "harpie" off
their back.
Good luck.
