John,
I am on "Digest" mode so I will, perhaps, be in a time warp situation.
Yeah, I was correct. The left/right thing is waaaaay beyond me.
Anyway, we have made big progress here. Well, if you can go to "the Brain"
demo at
http://www.thebrain.com/products/personalbrain/support/tutorials/pbtour.html
(I know, I have DSL and that may not be possible for you.) you will, I
believe, have your questions about data entry answered. But in a nutshell
the data entry is the same as it always has been and using the same familiar
applications.
Now, understand that I am not a programmer (nor a willing "Tinkerer) but I
can "see" someone using this technology to create a self-contained genealogy
program. One that, while I wouldn't understand it any better than I do TMG,
I would find much more user-friendly. I guess to my simple mind, your
statement that "you don't think such a display would serve as a replacement
for TMG's three views" is like saying that "I don't see how FoxPro has any
usefulness" while looking at a TMG screen. (Please, don't take that
personal, it is only my way of putting it in perspective -- that it is all
behind the scenes.) Until someone actually writes the program, we will just
have to build castles in our minds... and, of course, it all works fine in
my mind.
I guess, I see what you call the "visual-relationships capability" as more a
way to quickly get at the information than a way to manipulate data, per se.
Sort of in the same way GUI replaced DOS... for example, I remember what a
leap in my happiness level it was when "drag n drop" replaced retyping
everything. (Alas not possible in TMG... yes, I know, "cut n paste" works
so, everyone, please don't attack me.)

That is certainly more clear. I think such a feature would be
technologically
interesting--it appeals to the creative side of my brain. But the logical
side
kicks in immediately and wonders how the linked detail would be accessed and
rendered. Perhaps more importantly, which tasks that a user performs while
using
a genealogical database would be better served by the new method than the
current method(s)? Personally, I don't think such a display would serve my
needs
better as a replacement for TMG's three primary views. I'd start thinking
about
how it might replace or abet the Tree View or Family View. But.. umm... I
use
the PV about 95% of the time. And the meat and potatoes, data entry and
reporting, how are they influenced by the visual relationships capability?
