Somewhere in the back of my mind I recall that it is possible to enable
or disable Autorun on a CD-ROM drive. Forgotten how to do this and it is
probably different for each version of Windows, anyway, but this could
possibly be the problem.

No luck so far on getting autorun to work. I have Windows ME with MSIE
6. This is what I have tried so far in an [autorun] file:
1. open=start index.htm per John Cardinal
2. shellexecute=index.htm per Larry Goldsmith
3. open="autorun.exe index.htm" per James
4. open=autorun.exe index.htm just in case quotes were the problem
5. open=index.htm my own idea
My autorun feature is enabled.
Any other suggestions?
