Hi, Walt....
I chose to subscribe to the Ancestry.com online census service. I live in
a rural area on the coast of North Carolina. While the libraries in my
area have microflim capability, they don't have extensive collections of
either microfilm census records or indices, lacking the storage space for
those collections. And while there is good availability from other sources
which could deliver to the library in a couple days, I find that most of
the time I'm searching for a single page or group of pages in the same
area, and it would only take a few minutes to examine the film. Most of
the time I don't like waiting, because other things get in the way once the
films arrive. So the online images offer me the opportunity to access the
records when I want and on a moment's notice. And, if I need to go back
and refer to the page again, I can save it to CD and do just
that. Although it is a pricey service, I'm satisfied so far. I do wish
they had better indexing and that they'd get indexes online for the later
census years. But all things in time.....
Hope this helps....
Peace,
Part of the Tree,
