That would seem to me to restrict the range of new features that could be
offered.

In fact, I've often wondered just what type of program Bob would have come up
with if he had had a completely clean sheet to begin with when it came time
for 5.0 and not been restricted by having to clear the "compatible with
previous versions" hurdle.

At some point in time it will be imperative that in order to advance the ties
to the past will have to be cut. We've seen the beginning in Windows XP Pro
and its lack of support for certain accessories and the unwillingness of the
manufacturers to provide drivers for certain things.

While continuity is to be greatly desired we can not afford to let it hinder
future development.
