Looks like someone else has my problem, Richard, although he is lucky. My
exhibit log takes 9 minutes to open. I have a deskjet on the machine at
home that is slow to open, but not on the one at work. I wonder if that
could be my problem.

Hi Carl,

That is not good news. I was hoping for an easier fix. <grin>

I had long delays while opening Slideshow Manager or Exhibit Log but
did not know it. I thought the
long delay was normal. It was not until another list member reported
that Exhibit Log opened in <2 seconds on one computer but took a long
time to open on another that I knew I had a problem. Eventually, I did
some tests myself. To make a long story short, with one line in
Win.ini under [windows], "device=HP DeskJet 690C
v11.0,HPFDJC16,LPT1:", disabled, I too get a < 2 second open.

I use Windows 98 SE which has msconfig. Before I give the steps I used
to isolate what was causing EL and SSM to open slowly, it would be
best to know if you have msconfig. To check: click [Start], select
Run, enter msconfig, and click [OK]. If System Configuration Utility
opens, great! Look under the Win.ini tab for [windows], click on the +
box to open that list and check for device=HP ...

If you have such a line, before you do ANYTHING more, GO BACK TO THE
GENERAL TAB AND CLICK [Create Backup]. Return to the Win.ini tab and
remove the checkmark from the device=HP ... line. Click [Apply] then
[OK] and in the box that pops up, click [Yes]. After the reboot, run
msconfig and make sure the checkmark is still gone and a new device=HP
kine has not been added. If not, open TMG and EL. If we are real
lucky, you have found the culprit fairly easily. At your option, you
can open msconfig and click [Restore]. Doing so will put the checkmark
back and, of course, the problem.

Please let me know the results. If this worked, please send me the
full content of the line you disabled.
