I imported one of about 8000 names with a lot of trepidation, since I had
previously had problems with bugs in the merging process. It seems to have
worked OK this time.

First, make a backup of your data before you import. When you import, you
must merge everything manually. The imported people won't even be in the
same dataset after the import until you merge the datasets. Once you merge
the datasets, there will be duplicate people with the same name (in my case
different names a lot of the time, but the same people: back in the middle
ages, they often had multiple ways of refering to the same person). You
will have to merge each of those manually. Then, you have to merge every
tag manually, as after each merge, there could be duplicate tags. If you
just delete tags, you will lose any source information attached to the
deleted tag.

The alternative to doing this is to type all the data in manually for the
people in the GEDCOM. A bit slower than merging them, but less dangerous.
