One of the reasons why I'm searching for a new genealogy program was the
availability of a "PreSurname" field because of indexes etc. My own surname
for instance has changed from "te Prange" to "van de Prange" to "Prange". I
want them all to sort as Prange. The same applies to a lot of other surnames
in my family-file.
In my opinion a good database should store information only once. In this case
there should be a table with only one fieldentry with the name Prange. In all
the name-records there should only be reference to this field-entry, not the
name itself. This is a bad design.

[Just a thought, but if you already have the entire
[surname "van de jones", etc. in the surname field,
[you could ignore the PreSurname field and continue
[typing the entire surname in the ordinary surname
[field. In other words, just because TMG give you added
[flexibility of the extra field, it's not required that
[you use it.
