Victoria,
Now that I think about it, there as a recent exchange on this list about
using name styles in census tags. This might be worth exploring since I
think that way you can get just the first name you want, plus, if you want
to get fancy, you can include the age in one of the name elements so you can
avoid without sentences for the witnesses. I think it was discussed by both
Teresa and Myrnice. Teresa puts the person's age in one of the name style
elements, and Myrnice has a most impressive method, which I am pasting
below:
Title - The role played by this individual in this census (Head of
household, wife, daughter, son, niece, etc.)
Prefix - The place of birth listed in this census for this individual.
Given Name - As it appears in this census for this individual.
Presurname - Misc info you wish that is included between the birth place and
occupation on the output.
Surname - As it appears in this census for this individual.
Suffix - Age as it appears in this census in parentheses.
Other Name -the word "occupation: " followed by the occupation listed in
this census
So, you see you can get as complex as you want to. But keep in mind that
if all you want to do is use name styles to get a first name only, I'm
pretty sure that will work. But, I say again that I have no experience with
name styles other than what I've read on this list.
James
