I also have people from differant countries. you can be consistent by
always putting a UK county in the L5 field. in UK english county is the
same as state in Aussie or US. they are the same thing we just call them
differant. that's why place styles were invented for v5. so for US the
place style is the default then create a placestyle for each country you
have.
eg for Aussie
L3 = suburb
L4 = city
L5 = state
for NZ
L3 = suburb
L4 = city
L5 = district
for UK for my research time
L3 = parish
L4 = town
L5 = county
the labels are just a translation into the local english of that country of
what that level is. I live in Hamilton city in NZ. There is also Hamilton
in Australia and Scotland and probably others so you would also filter by
country.

Fair logic. So far so good.....

If I put the county of Nottinghamshire into L5 instead of L4, then I
cannot be consistent :-(
Although the great majority of my people are in England, my records have
USA and Australian entries too. So I need US counties and states just as
they are.
And if, as you suggest, I use L4 for a city/village/town, what are the
odds of having an entry with a US county of exactly the same name as an
English town? Yup! I do have!! ;-)
