Thank you so much to Teresa and Elizabeth. I knew that some simple
thing that I was doing wrong was causing my problem. I'm learning by my
mistakes. Thanks.

The role when used like this only refers to ONE person. That should fix
your problem.

Subject: [TMG] Singular v Plural in Role Sentences

I hope I can explain this so that someone can help me.

I have used Teresa's sentence structures to create sentences for roles
in a new tag that I created "Census1910." I used Teresa's sentence
structures, with some minor modifications. As Teresa suggested, in
addition to several others, I created the following roles and their
sentences:

[R:Head of Family]

[:CR:][:CR:]On the 1910 U.S. census [R:Head of Family] was listed as the
head of household <[L]> <(recorded [D])>. The official date of this
census was 15 Apr 1910. Also living in the household were <his wife,
[R:wife]><, his son, [R:son]><, his sons, [R:sons]><, his daughter,
[R:daughter]><, his daughters, [R:daughters]> (I will leave out the rest
as it includes all the other roles that I created. I also created a
female version of this to be used for a female head of family)

[R:wife]

[:CR:][:CR:][R:wife] was enumerated as the wife of [R:Head of Family] on
the 1910 census <recorded [D]><[L]>. The official date of this census
was 15 Apr 1910. <[M1]>

[R:son]

[R:son] was enumerated as the son of [R:Head of Family] on the 1910
census <recorded [D]><[L]>. The official date of this census was 15 Apr
1910. <[M1]>

[R:sons]

[R:sons] were enumerated as the sons of [R:Head of Family] on the 1910
census <recorded [D]><[L]>. The official date of this census was 15 Apr
1910. <[M1]>

[R:daughter]

[R:daughter] was enumerated as the daughter of [R:Head of Family] on the
1910 census <recorded [D]><[L]>. The official date of this census was 15
Apr 1910. <[M1]>

[R:daughters]

[R:daughters] were enumerated as the daughters of [R:Head of Family] on
the 1910 census <recorded [D]><[L]>. The official date of this census
was 15 Apr 1910. <[M1]>

For my paternal grandfather's family, I assigned the roles as follows:
Max HELD, [R:Head of Family]; Ida HELD [R:wife]; Jacob, Carlyle and
Alexander HELD [R:sons]; and Frances and Doris HELD [R:daughters]. I
chose the plural forms of the roles for the sons and daughters as that
allowed the narrative in a report for Max to read correctly. However,
when I go to the PV for each of the children and create a narrative
report for each of them showing them as witnesses to Max's census event,
the plural form of the verb is used there also and their sentences all
read:

"He (or she) were enumerated as the sons (or daughters) of Max HELD on
the 1910 census recorded 16 APR 1910 in 473 E. 12th Street, Brooklyn,
Kings Co., New York. (clipped the rest)

If I change the roles of each of the sons and daughters to singular in
the Census1910 tag for Max, then the kids all read correctly and Max's
narrative reads incorrectly.

How do you create a sentence structure that works for both the kids and
the father? Or can you??

As always, I'm sure there is a simple explanation that has so far eluded
me. Sorry this is so long.
