How do you "know" their father was white? I think you do NOT know....but if
it'll make you feel any better, probably the person who was completing the
census information did not "know " if they were black, either. My guess, is he
was guessing.
It was a "few" years after 1870/1880 when DNA came into being and unless
someone was actually there and observed it, when the "act" was taking
place....they probably don't really know who was the father.
Probably more that anyone wanted to know about it....<grin>,
