I want to respond to parts of this subject:
1) I am not aware of any requirement to remove old versions of Abode
Acrobat Reader when installing new versions. To assist in testing the
usability of PDF files I create for publication on the web, I have
versions 3.02, 4.05b and 5.1.0 of Adobe Acrobat Reader and version 6.0
of Adobe Reader installed on my Windows XP Home-equipped computer. I am
sometimes surprised with what version "comes up," but as far as I know,
the different versions do not fight with each other. (As many of you
know, Version 3 is now almost useless; it fails to read virtually every
PDF file created with current software. I still have it installed so
that I can compare symptoms reported to me by many who complain that
they can't read my PDF files.)
2) Many software packages "silently" install Adobe Acrobat Reader,
sometimes without checking to see if some version of this program is
already installed. So I suspect that you may have had version 3 on your
computer for quite some time without realizing it. I'll assume some
registry quirk has suddenly caused version 3 to come to the forefront
(shades of some of the quirks of the Macintosh operating systems when
you [foolishly, on a Mac] installed multiple versions of the same
program).
