Hi, Caroline:

As reported in a rather tiresome thread on list last month, my "Reply To" field, when I am using Web Mail, is simply not under my control. Both testing and Earthlink tech support confirm this. Sorry. (And that's what they told me, too.) :( I would much rather be using Eudora, but I am babysitting the mainframe at work this evening. It wouldn't be prudent to reconfigure our department's PCs (even my own) to set up a program that has no business purpose, even if I were only to use it during breaks in the action....

I understand that in the environment of your own program these Role names make good sense. My comment had to do with communicating the use of these Roles to others. I puzzled over how your sentences could *possibly* work for what seemed an eternity (probably only a minute or two), because you were "obviously" using a Role assigned to the child to generate a pronoun, but it was equally obvious it could be the wrong pronoun. Then the light went on that "1st Child" wasn't the first child at all, but that child's parent. And I *still* find it confusing. Even in the context of a Person View, I am so conditioned to seeing the Role name as being the "role" of the FOCUS PERSON, that when I see your example:

Birth Oct 1870 1st Child; Ethel Maud H Bentley

I "see" the following: "The event is a Birth, the date is October 1870, Reverend Bentley was a 1st Child, the first connected person is Ethel Maud H. Bentley."

As far as what you do with your own program setup, that is obviously a matter of personal taste, not of a good or bad way of doing things. If it makes sense to you, and helps you accomplish your genealogical goals, then it is good.

I can't look at the screen shot for the good Reverend Bentley. My browser tells me the JPG file is missing. From the link, it appears that your site still has a link to your C: drive for the file's location.

For what little it may be worth.

Darrell

to be very confusing. I am not sure it's much of an improvement, but how
about "ParOfC1"???

Hi Darrell,

First of all, your "Reply To" field seems to have got filled in again.
Clicking Reply addressed this message to you personally, not the list.

I agree that the Role names look confusing for a parent but, in practice,
they don't cause me any difficulties. I think that's because I use the form
[RS:1st Child] and to me that automatically reads "his 1st child" or "her
1st child".

On the other hand, these Role names are a big advantage when it comes to the
parent's Person View display. I have the Birth tag set up to display Roles
for Witnesses and so these witnessed Birth tags read:

Birth Oct 1870 1st Child; Ethel Maud H Bentley

Birth Sep 1871 - Dec 1871 2nd Child; Mabel Annie Bentley

Birth 24 Oct 1874 3rd Child; Vivian Macaulay Bentley

and so on.

I have posted a screenshot of Rev Joseph Bentley's Person View, showing how
these tags look, at: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/caroline.gurney1/Roles.htm
