On or about 09:32 01/20/04 a carrier pigeon from Kathy Tabb delivered:
>Say what? <VBG> My brain hurts just trying to read this!!!
Heh... The story itself was supposed to read something like a
report in a scientific journal.
There /was/ another short story that made use of thiotimoline. The
idea being that space ships would travel at high speeds using the ability
of the compound to "reach through time" for the place it would be dissolved
(or some such). Pilots were selected based on their ability to concentrate...
Training flight, new cadets being lectured about how the compound
is used... Out to Jupiter and back (or something like that). Question is
raised as to whether any "time" errors had ever happened, and the admiral
goes to great lengths about how safe it is.
Then they land, and the crew man who opens the hatch reports,
loudly, that "there are Indians out there"... The Admiral goes into
shock... Turns out the ship landed in... ready... India (in the correct
time period).
Of course, Asimov also had a taste for really bad puns... The
short "Shah Guido G." sets up for "once again, Atlantis sank beneath the
Waves" (Waves were the female military guard, Atlantis was the imperial
city that floated on anti-gravity system -- during a ceremony, the entire
Wave deployment lands on Atlantis, and the anti-grav can't handle it). If
you don't think that ending is bad enough, look at the title, and change
the spacing <G>.
