That's what I thought too, but I had never seen anything like that before.
$10000 seems like a LOT of money. They must have had a lot of faith in him.

It looks like to me this is the Bond that David Hunter filed on the occasion
of his appointment. That he and the other men listed guaranteed a $10,000
bond against his appointment to the position of clerk.
