I forgot to mention the different dates needed in the below filter. To get
death tags with the year 1880 in the date I used 1881 for the first value
and 1880 for the second:
Field Subfield Operator Value
Death Group Date <= [?] {input the year you want +1,
into the first blank}
Death Group Date >= [?] {input the year you want
into second blank}

Importance: High
Thanks, Peter! THAT was what I was missing! I thought the <contains '?'>
would work like any other [?] search, but it doesn't! I added a question
mark to the end of a death date and then ran the contains '?' filter and it
found the new record!
THANKS Peter, Jill and Myrnice for your help on this! I used your last
filter suggestion Myrnice, and it did not return anything. But the
following filter worked well enough (it contained all the people I wanted,
plus anyone else who died in 1880 (expected) and anyone whose range
_started_ with 1880). It will do the job! The [?] works too so I've save
the filter and will use it to clean up my few remaining census-based death
tags with aft XXXX dates.
Death Group - Date - <= [?]
Death Group - Date - >= [?]
Thanks, again!!
Jan
P.S. I did not realize you could put a question mark in a date! I will use
this where appropriate.

The filter condition date contains ? finds dates with a single ?.
See extract below from "help file" about dates with a question mark
Question Mark
A date entered with a single question mark will not be considered
"irregular." The date will be sorted as if the question mark were not there.
(Example: 30 Jun 1975?)
