I have used this approach in TMG for several years. I only use these types
of roles/sentences for birth and death dates. I use DocEst, GuessEst and
CensusEst sentences for the birth tag and GuessEst, WillEst and DocEst for
the death tag. It simplifies birth and death entries. We have talked about
this before... as I recall you were not a fan of this approach when I
started thinking about how to set it up.
The main reason I decided to do this was because I wanted to be more
specific about estimates and modifiers in birth and death sentences. It
works very well. Never had a problem.

: Hi, Rae Jean:
:
: Creative, but I would not be comfortable using what is normally a method
to qualify a *person's* relationship to an event to indicate the event's
relationship to a *date*. When applied in quantity, such approaches often
"bite" the user, especially during version upgrades. There would also be
problems (at a minimum, increased complexity) when multiple persons are
linked to the event.
:
: My preference would be to use one of the split memo fields, if available.
:
: [R:child] was born <[M2]> <[D]> <[L]> <[M1]>
:
: The memo field might look like this:
:
: in the old family home||during a blizzard about
:
: With the child's name, a place, and a date filled in, this would output:
:
: John Smith was born during a blizzard about 25 Dec
: 1887 in North East Westmoreland, New Hampshire, in
: the old family home.
:
: Don't quote me on the exact punctuation [grin].
