Jane did not send the first message, I did. Yes I ran everything execpt VFI but Dorothy from TMG support had me do that and it did not solve the problem. I also restored a backup from before 5.13 and added some names but it did the same thing in the same place.

My use of the [ ] is Mary (last name unknown) is wife of Elias Lambert. I enter her name as Mary [Lambert] and it sorts at the beginning of the picklist as

[Lambert], Mary

but for the children I was entering the surnames of both parents were known and there were no brackets.

After my first posting I noticed that the names were listed

Flanagan Zimri F. [ ]

with no comma after the surname Flanagan.

The names were added as children to a set of parents and added their spouses. Same way I have always done it.

There is one other error in what I reported earlier. They are not in numerical order but in the order I added them. The difference is I was using some numbers from earlier deletions, thinking this was the problem I added a couple more using the next default number. Those came up after the other numbers, so far numerical order, then I went back and used some unused numbers at random. They are listed in the order I entered them and not numerical order.

I have also told Dorothy this only happening in one project. All the rest that I have tested are working the way they should. The BIG problem here is this project has 52,000 names in it. (So I have a LARGE family and they all intermarried. Maybe that's the problem.)

I read your earlier message this morning about this problem, Jane, and tried
without luck to reproduce it. Maybe I missed a detail. As I recall:

You added 5 or 6 people
The Picklist was sorted by surname
You clicked F2 and could not find the newly-added names in order by surname
(?)
You finally found the names together on the Picklist in order by ID# (?)
All the names were followed by [ ] - which is what you normally use for
married (maiden?) names but did not use in these cases.

Can you add any more details or clarify these if I misunderstood? How did
you add the names? Could the errant [ ]'s have come from the children of a
person; say you entered a person with surname Jones [ ] and then added children
and so the empty brackets became part of the children's surnames? (I'm
grasping at straws <g>.)

Were all these names entered after you installed 5.13? I think you said you
reindexed, optimized and ran VFI. Right?
