In my experience, a good digital camera can take pictures with significantly
less light than a regular camera. I copy great amounts of information with
a digital cameral and never have to use the flash. I have also found that
steadying the camera with a tripod, using only one or two of the legs, to be
a requirement for CONSISTENTLY clear pictures, although using something to
brace the arms will work much of the time. Another essential that I have
found is to use a remote shutter release so the camera can remain steady
when tripping the shutter. The remote shutter/tripod combination is
particularly essential if working in a dim area, like some libraries, where
the shutter speed will slow down to compensate for lack of a flash. Not all
cameras are available with the remote shutter feature, so one has to search
the fine print. The feature is not generally advertised as one of the top
capabilities when marketing cameras.

For flat copy work, a cheap camera stand (without light fixtures) replaces
the tripod. If you are fortunate to be copying pix at a relatives house,
just set up near a window and normal daylight will make wonderful photos.
By the way, the tripod I use is a small collapsible one that fits into my
briefcase.

Another thing about digital cameras is that one does not generally need a
set of close-up lenses as required for normal cameras, because adequate
close-up capabilites seem to be built into the ones I have owned. I have
bought the close-up lenses for digital in the past, but have never had to
use them.

Just some non-expert opinions.
