Yes, Pope Gregory decreed the use of the Gregorian calendar beginning in
1583. However, only _some_ Catholic countries adopted that
calendar. Other countries adopted the Gregorian calendar in later
years. England, being stubborn because of the animosity between the
Catholic Church and the Church of England, was a hold out and did not adopt
the Gregorian calendar until 1752.
