What about an iPod mini which can record voice notes? You may find
something else that is cheaper but check it has the features you want.

Alternately you may want to look at one of the Sony minidisc
recorders. Each disk stores about 80 minutes in stereo, but at least
double that in mono which is a lot of note taking. You can drop track
marks into it so that you can skip to the note you want.

Like most things we are unfamiliar with, either of these may seem
mysterious and complicated before you start. However, just take the time
to follow instructions step-by-step for each function once or twice, and
then they are simple too!
