Another cause for "unused" places not being removed using optimize might
be hidden characters in any place field. Recently I spent some time
cleaning up my MPL adding missing counties, using the web look up
feature to find the county name, I did a copy/paste to the county field.
I used a text macro to add the word County, but since the text macro
feature strips the leading space, I used ALT+255County. Although they
"look" the same, they are different.
As it should TMG treats ALT+255 as a different character than - space -
. I was able to filter for those places where I had used the ALT+255
character, and go back and remove the ALT+255 and replace it with a
regular space.
