Hi, Linda:

If TMG 6 is creating a compliant GEDCOM file, then TMG 4 should be able to import it (since compliance is defined in both cases by Wholly Genes). This is comletely unlike a database transfer, in which case you are quite correct -- it won't work.

To my knowledge, you can't transfer data from a current version to a
previous version. That is probably 99.9% of your problem.
