I have had several computers over the years. I currently have a Gateway
Notebook M675 that I love. I had a Dell Notebook for 4 years and it failed
(had trouble with the video card, that was replaced under warranty and then
a "part" broke but it isn't under warranty so it's more expensive to send it
in to be fixed than to buy a new one). I had a previous Gateway Desktop
that was fine. I also have an Emachine Desktop C2684 from Costco for my
kids and it has been totally trouble free (Gateway now owns Emachine I
believe).

My own opinion with Dell is that they had great products and great service
and sold alot and then their service and quality went downhill because they
were so popular.

Good luck with your choices. One of my favorite features of the newer
computers are the multi-card readers for camera files. We go on trips, I
copy everyone's photos onto my hard drive and burn a CD for everyone in the
group.
