Happened to be watching "Law and Order" on TV last night and there were
two lesbians who lived together and had a girl of about 12. The girl
was with one of her mothers and confessed to the police that she stabbed
a boy. They arrested her. The mother was told to get a lawyer and he
said the admission was illegal as it was not in the presence of her
mother, as required by law, because the mother had never adopted her
legally. Everyone had assumed she had though so the charges had to be
dropped. Shows adoptions can not be assumed. In my tree I have a family
that was "adopted", but it was never legally done as they could not
prove the parents were killed in concentration camp. Someone also
mentioned the Kinder transport and what happened to all those children?
As an unrelated aside my mother said that there is a Jewish tradition
that if someone is on their deathbed you rename them to confuse the
Angel of Death. Has anyone else heard of this, and is the new name ever
used, as she is not using it for the person except in quotes on letters.
