I agree with what Terry and David wrote. I would like to add that I often
set the primary name to the name a person used (e.g., "Brad") and then add
another name tag, with a sort date set to the day after their birth that
gives the full formal name ("James Bradley"). I use a custom name tag for
it, "Name-Full".

[PP] full name was [N] <[M]>

The "full name" terminology may not be the best for your cases, but you may
want to consider setting the general issue of which name to set primary.
