Also it should be noted that there is a hard limit for file names within
Windows XP at 256, while Windows 2000 is 260 characters in length, which
INCLUDES the path to get there. Please review the following:
So this is not entirely TMG's fault, it is Windows XP by design, long
filenames are great, but they really do have limits...

HELP!!!! Conversion error #6)
I want to thank everybody who gave me advice with this problem. It has now
been explained and I have a work-around.
* First of all, it was not a hardware problem or conflict. That
* It did not involve Norton Anti-Virus or Systemworks or any other
* It did not involve a printer driver of any variety, 'unusual' or
* It did not involve the external software used by TMG to produce
the screen reports. (BTW, I've always like the way that looks!)
* It did not involve a Spam blocker, or an Adware blocker, or a
It did not involve anything at all but TMG and what looks like a holdover
from its original DOS days.
The module which tried to open the file \Wordproc\wx.cf could not open it
because the module could not understand pathnames that were as deep as my
\wordproc directory was (My Documents\My Genealogy\Genealogy Programs\The
I moved (uninstall/reinstall) the main \The Master Genealogist directory up
one level and, voila! I now have reports.
Since TMG is advertised to run on XP, I assumed it would run in any
legitimate XP directory, unless otherwise noted. Since I did not see any
restriction I installed TMG in a logical place in my directory structure
instead of \Program Files.
I hope TMG/WhollyGenes will either document this restriction or eliminate it
very soon. Meanwhile it will at least be documented here.
Thank you all again, and particular thanks to TMG for introducing me to
the Belarc Advisor. Very nice little program! And also to Phil (at
WhollyGenes) for showing me Dependency Walker. That one is great!
ps Now I can get back to doing genealogy!
