I'm scanning nearly everything. All my census images are digital. I use
Adobe to web caputre web sites and indexes from Ancestry and other online
sources. If I take notes, I scan them or transcribe them into a text file.
I use a USB pen drive for digital images at my Family History Center now
that I can do that. If someone posta mails me a genealogy report or form of
any kind, I scan it in as an Adobe PDF.
The only paper I keep are birth/death certificates or other primary items
that I paid money for. I even scanned the SS applications and got rid of the
'originals' since they are just xeroxes from the SS Administration. If
anyone else re-does my work and isn't happy with digital, they can order the
records themselves. I keep it all in one folder with file names like DOE
John 1900 Birth cert.jpg or WV Tucker Clover 1930 Census Pg 5.jpg I've
only been doing this for about 6 years, and had way, way too much paper.
Some day I may have to convert jpg and pdf to whatever new format comes
along, but usually that can be done in some batch fassion. And I keep
copies on 2 different hard drives, and burn a DVD to take to work (off site)
every few months.

|Can anyone direct me to an article or three on paper clutter.
|I save everything and something has to go. There are 4 metal
|drawers of surname material.
| 4-6 drawers of backup to be checked. Primary and
|interesting material is in loose leafs. Only 1 or 2 surnames
|are on the computer and complete. TMG database is
|interesting to me but not the family. I like to print out
|detail chronological stuff and they want paragraphs which
|would take up miles of paper.
|
|Any ideas would be welcome. Pat
