I have a small library of books on the subject of identifying and dating
old photographs. Some are more useful than others. I recently
discovered, and bought, the book that I now consider a major reference
on the subject:
"Dressed for the Photographer: Ordinary Americans & Fashion, 1840-1900,"
Joan Severa, Ohio: Kent State University Press, 1995. The ISBN is
It's a large book, 592pp, hard-bound, chock full of good information
focused on dating photographs, and location somewhat, by modes of dress.
It is a scholarly endeavor well presented.
Since this was a new title for me, although maybe not for others, I
thought I'd pass it on. Amazon has several copies that although listed
as "Used" are little used and best described as "Previously Owned." All
are reasonably priced.
