You may be thinking of Word's proclivity for changing two hyphens into an
en-dash or an em-dash based on placement. With autocorrect turned on,

word -- word = word – word

word--word = word—word

If you actually type two endashes (Ctrl+hyphen on the number pad) they'll
*look* like an emdash, but still be 2 endash units. Also, you can type an
emdash in Word with Ctrl+Alt+hyphen on the numberpad.

Would that TMG recognized those little shortcuts. I'm a huge fan of
emdashes, but there's no easy way to use them in TMG.

Two en-dashes are normally used to create one em-dash when the
em-dash character is not available. MS/Word (and I think
WordPerfect) will (in certain cases) automatically convert two
en-dashes to an em-dash when typing in the program.
