My philosophy for the last several years now has been to buy the second most
powerful CPU available. It's a method that has served me well, as my current
system -- an AMD Athlon 1800+ built by Falcon NW -- is now nearly four years
old and I'm just now beginning to think about considering the possiblity of
maybe replacing it. The most expensive thing out there is almost always too
expensive for the benefit, but the next tier down has some pretty good legs.
Then again, I'm a gamer. ;)
I have 1GB of RAM and a very decent graphics card, and while TMG data entry
is very fast, screen redraw still hesitates from time to time. Definitely
spring for the extra RAM, as you'll use it eventually. Likewise the most
hard drive space you can afford -- storage is cheap, eventually you *will*
fill it up, and RAID setups are an easy, affordable backup measure. I deeply
regret not springing for one on this system.
Get a big monitor -- you'll appreciate that as much as or more than an extra
CPU.
