Those of you familiar with the now defunct Generations program are also
probably familiar with what is gently called the "disappearing data syndrome" in
Generations. If data is entered into a field and you try to save the entry,
the field goes blank. The problem has been linked to conflicts between
Generations and many, many other program files.
There is a way, tedious and time-consuming, to determine if this is the
problem in TMG. First, make a backup copy of your TMG data and give it a name
that reminds you this is a junk copy, i.e., no harm is done if the file is
trashed. Create a "restore point" through Windows and make a note of the
date/time.
Now go to start>run> enter "msconfig">click>startup tab and deselect all
programs listed except the most basic needed to reboot. Save the change; you
will be forced to reboot at this point.
Now try to replicate the problem in your "trash" TMG file. If you cannot,
then one of the files you deselected is the culprit. The next step is
tedious. One at a time, re-select a file in the startup menu, save the change,
reboot, and then try to replicate the problem.
As each computer is going to be slightly different, I cannot counsel you on
what programs are the most basic needed to boot your computer. There are
others on this list more able to do that or you should probably consult with
Microsoft Tech Support...grin...for advice.
Also, you should disconnect your modem before starting this procedure as you
will have to initially deselect your antivirus/firewall protection.
