Adding to what Lee had.....
I have a rule of thumb...if I am looking at an original (e.g. WWI draft
registration) I cite the registration first and then refer to the
website(ancestry.com). If I am looking at a transcription in a database, I
cite the web site first (e.g. ancestry.com) and then in parentheses have the
source data. Just the way I decided to do it.

Subject: [TMG] Source Cleanup question
I am trying to finish fixing my sources and citations - a project that I
hope will be the final stage in a 3 year "cleanup" project. I'm trying to
do this correctly this time, so that I do not ever have to do it again! <G>
My question: If my source is a document which has been transcribed on
Rootsweb or USGenWeb, and the source of the original data is cited there, my
thought is that I would like to keep the citation to the original data, but
I can't find examples in Mills' QuickSheet or Evidence! for doiong that. I
have ordered a copy of the Chicago Manual of Style, but am too impatient to
wait :)
Here is an example of a citation with USGenWeb as a source (this not my full
citation but what is currently in the CD). It has a transcriber, record
name, and two sources for that source. I would love to kow how others treat
this situation:
Jean Stephenson, transcriber, "Revolutionary War Volunteer Roll", copied
from Virginia Eliza (Green) Singleton, The Singletons of South Carolina,
published privately, 1914, and printed in the National Genealogical Society
Quarterly, volume 18, number 3, 1930
Thanks!
Cheryl
