Hi Sue,
I also save the images (although I do not attach them, as Teresa does) as
well as the transcript that I make of the WW I Draft Registration card. The
transcription is the information that I noted from the image. These details
are recorded on various tags, and the card itself is the source, whether you
are looking at the image or a transcription that you have made as you source
various tags.
You may choose to also include the transcription, either as a memo in a tag
(if you want it to appear in narratives) or in the full footnote and/or
bibliography. In any case, this is a separate issue from how to source it.
It is still the card itself that is the source. You would note in the
bibliography (and perhaps also full footnote and short footnote) whether you
were consulting an image or a transcription. If it is your OWN
transcription, as I was supposing, I would not make any note about the
transcription at all. Whether you are analyzing the image and directly
inputing the data, or adding the extra step of recording a transcription
first, I don't see how it makes a difference. If you are consulting someone
else's transcription, then I would indeed include that as an element in the
footnotes and bibliography. The goal in sourcing is to leave a trail so that
someone else could check the same things that you did in order to verify
your facts.
If you want to include the full transcription in TMG, I would make a
separate tag (or use the anecdote tag), as Teresa does, or else change the
sentence structure and include the transcription right in the regular tag. I
have a WW I Draft tag where I include many of the details off the card,
though not a transcription. If you DO really want the full transcription
included, I would place it at the time of the registration itself (either as
part of that tag or one just for transcriptions) and simply note it as a
source on the other tags (birth, at least, maybe others).
Hope this helps a little,
Carol Simpson
