I first enter the source in TMG, then attach the image to the source. I feel
this gives me much more flexability on printing or not printing the source
image then attaching to the event tag. This also makes the image available
everywhere the source is used.
Then I use a series of custom tags to enter the data from the document such
as census, death certificate, draft registration, etc. In a few cases I feel
the image of the document is so important to the person's information that I
also attach it to the event tag. I also print out a copy of the document and
then attach the transcription to it. The information from the
transcription/document is what makes up the tag information and entering it
into the tag in a memo or something like that would be a duplication of the
data.
If anything I would put it in the comment field of the source ("Supplemental
Tab") or set up a custom "Document Text" tag that you could choose to print
or not print in reports. The Document Text flag would be set with a sort
date immediately following the document and have a sentence something like
"[M]" with the text of the document in the memo field.
For census information I don't print out the "transcription" page, I use a
standard census transcription sheet and hand complete this while the image
is on screen. This gives me a good place to enter comments to myself, enter
the person's ID number, the source number, etc. In most cases the only thing
the transcription page adds is the microfilm roll number. These sheet are
available free on line through many sources including Ancestry.
For draft cards the situation is the same. The information is entered in the
appropriate tags. Entering the text of the draft registration in a memo, etc
would be a duplication. Remember the act of registering for the draft would
be an event and tag by it's self.

Subject: [TMG] Transcripts and Images
When using the on-line images I subscribe to, I routinely save the image of
the document, and save a transcription of the document. With PAF, I used the
"Notes" fields for the transcripts.
Now in TMG, I have a WWI draft registration card for one of the persons in
my file. It will be a source for birth date, occupation & location for that
date, physical characteristics and alternate name.
How do I enter the transcription and image? Is the transcription a "memo"
or a "Citation detail" or something else entirely?
Thanks again.
Sue
