Another variation (possibly already mentioned):
In the comments field (supplemental tab) of all my sources I put || and then
enter as M2 a copy of the full and short footnote along with notes to myself
and an example of what I intended for each CD field.

Then later it doesn't take too long to select the source, open the source
definition, click on the supplemental tab and see exactly how I intended the
CD fields to be used. I never incorporate M2 into any of my sources so there
is no conflict there.
