Well, I might as well add my 2 cents to this discussion as I have not seen
my lazy reasoning mentioned.
I use County instead of Co. or Cty. for the county field such as -- Beaufort
County
I use the 2 letter postal codes instead of US full state names such as -- NC
I do not use US or USA in the country field for our states.
I do use the full name of any other country such as -- Scotland.
The absolutely only reason I do this is to save space on the detail (person)
view so I can see more of the information relating to tags. About 95% of my
research is in the states.
What I would really like to do is to continue using the 2 letter postal
codes for tag entry and have those translated to full state names for TMG
reports and for Second Site output.
Of course, this is the opposite of what we can do now. If this option became
available, then I would use the full state name on a regular basis.

Subject: Re: [TMG] Abbreviations
Thought I'd put in my 2 cents (well, pennyworth anyway <g>) on the use of
abbreviations in place names. Quite a while ago, somebody from Australia
on
one of my many newslists complained about Americans (i.e. those of us from
the
United States) using abbreviations that are confusing to those in other
countries. That's when I quit using our common Postal Codes and writing
out state
names in full, also county names AND the word "County" (which I've seen
abbreviated Co. and Cty.) As for using the abbreviations for Saint (St. or
Ste.), Fort (Ft.), Mountain (Mt.), seems to me that would mostly depend on
whatever appears to be the local use. I've seen both Fort Lauderdale and
Ft.
Lauderdale, but only ever seen Mt. Dora, Florida. Note that there is
always, in
American English at least, a period after the abbreviation. As for
LA--well, I
had an email from somebody asking if I had any info on a family from LA to
which I replied that I really didn't know of any that had gone to Los
Angeles.
Sorta killed that bit of correspondence since she meant Louisiana. (head
hangs in shame). Made me wish we'd go back to some of the old
abbreviations--like Louisiana being "La.", capital L, little a, period.

Oh, and Theresa, why type and retype all the state names out? I thought
that's what F3 was for ;-)
