Hi,
As previously noted - by changing the default printer from a (disconnected)
network one to a PDF printer, the significant delays in opening TAGs and
their sub-windows (in excess of ten seconds to open a census tag, and
another ten to select a location field) have been reduced. Now opening a
TAG takes about three seconds and selecting a field (e.g. L3) is now
relatively instantaneous. I find this acceptable. I do not yet know if
there is a performance hit with the default printer being a connected
network one - rather than a disconnected one. [This will need to await my
return to work.] I will forward this behaviour to the TMG developers in
case it helps improve the product's performance.
Some people have mentioned Adaware being a problem. Please note that this
is the adware detection and removal product. I run this weekly, along with
running "Spybot S&D", and a full system scan by the anti-virus product - a
good couple of hours work which runs over night.
Another person was concerned at the lack of disk space. I have about 10% of
the disk free - and this is with most files compressed. I agree that this
is far from ideal - but buying a bigger disk is not an option. Yes - I do
keep files on an 8GB USB-stick, and could keep more. However, the
performance hit of running applications against files on such sticks, and
external hard-disk drives, is unacceptable to me. I use a fixed paging file
of 1.1GB, and only rarely hit problems - mainly when editing very large word
documents (e.g. > 800 pages with images). I find the overall system
performance acceptable.
So - what ever the cause of my performance problem, it was solved by
changing the default printer.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice and guidance - it was all much
appreciated.
regards
Chris
