That sounds to me like a screen has opened out of view, which is canceled by the Esc. key. I'd suggest temporarily moving the Details window aside so that the upper left to center area of the main TMG window is clear before trying to add a person. If my guess is correct, you will then be able to see the hidden screen. Often finding it once clears the problem.
