Yes, leave the names as they would have been. You won't find your New World
name in Old World records unless somebody moved back there.

You might try a soundex for common name searches in sources like rootsweb
worldconnect. It was designed to pick up a lot of this kind of stuff.
Metaphone is a similar idea for grouping names, available for this search. I
set it to "John Doe" to start.

R263 = Rexroth
R263 = Recksrodt
R263 = Rexroad
R263 = Rexrode

M200 = McKee
M200 = Mackay
M200 = M'Kie

M620 = Morris
M620 = Morice

Even so, there are exceptions for names known to be the same thread,
F236 = Foster
F623 = Forster
F623 = Forrester

C424 = Colclough
C420 = Coakley
C240 = Cokeley

especially if the first letter changes.
A653 = Arundel
A653 = Arendale
A654 = Arnold
O653 = Orendale

Since Arendale and Arnold were so close in the alphabet, members of both
families joined the Arnold Society of the South to utilize the information
from common searches in courthouses.
