Dear Kathy,
Like so many others, I would not lose the surnames as you have found them. I
record EVERY spelling variation I find in records for each person, using a
Name Tag of one kind or another. (I have about 15 Name Tags with different
sentences for different purposes.) For example, I have a Name-Poss Tag with
a sentence that outputs "Records have been found for Alexander Ballagh with
his name given as Alexander Ballah" and a Name-Standard Tag with output "It
is possible, from records of related people through history, that he may be
found under the name Alexander Bellah." I have some people who have 5 or 6
different Name Tags. I don't want to lose the information that their name
has been found spelled in different ways (it reminds me to look for other
spellings when I am looking for records, and I like that kind of
information), but I do want a Standard Tag to "group" them all together in
the List and indexes, etc. One of my Scottish ancestral lines has 23
variants (that I have found and verified so far), from McQueen to Sweyn and
some even further out there. And Irish people might have a Celtic surname,
an Anglicized Celtic surname, and an English surname for political reasons.
All these variations are one of the fascinating things about family history!
Go ahead, use some different Name tags for your purposes, and keep all of
that lovely information for the future.
