Dear Teresa,
Who was the informant on the death certificate for Nannie / Narnia / Nanie?
(I think I understood it to be someone who was probably a son.) As the name
seems very similar on the marriage certificate, it would seem likely that
one of these was her name. Is it possible that a regional dialect / accent
might have caused an enumerator (possibly with a different accent) to hear
"Narie" or something and think "Mary"? (It is so hard for me to put in
writing something that might only make sense if you could hear it.) Or is it
possible that she was really named Mary but everyone called her Nannie /
Narnia / Nanie through her life, so that the informant called her that when
he gave her death information, but when the census enumerator came around,
the family (probably her husband?) gave her real name, as it was the
government asking?
I've seen stranger name combinations. Try an Elizabeth who turns up in
anything written by family members as Jennie?! (Mom was Jean, so Jennie
makes sense, but for Elizabeth?)
