That's how I look at the census too. I think as long as you give the
information for them to find the original, they can find it at Ancestry,
Heritage Quest, Footnote, FamilySearch, on film from the FHL, at NARA... I
do record the name as it is listed though because I deal with some unusual
surnames that have some even more unusual ways of being spelt.

Hi Teresa,

As I live about 45 minutes from a branch of the Archives (and 10 minutes
from a public library with lots of NARA film), I've not used FHL census
films. I'm kind of in agreement with your example below...I have citations
that could look like that, had I taken the time and care to record the times
I accessed the source :)

I'm leaning toward the concept that anyone who has an Ancestry subscription
is probably already aware that the Federal census images are there :)

Cheryl

Cheryl,
You could always just put "can also be viewed at Ancestry.com." That
wouldn't imply that you have viewed it there, but would point out to your
reader that it's available there. On census, I will include the FHL film
number (when I use that film) but don't use "viewed at Ancestry.com" on
census. But I would for a database that I used there and not elsewhere.
That's more of a lazy thing on my part than a real decision process. <G>
Otherwise the source would read, "viewed on Ancestry 29 Jul 2007, on
Heritage Quest.com 01 Apr 2008, from microfilm 11 May 2008..." Who wants
to read that?

Yes.

Assuming this example is a rare case, I'd suggest one of two fixes:

- Simply cite the last one you used.

- Create a single source for this case (automatic if you make the household
unit the "source") and note in Comments the three cases, with as much or as
little detail as you like.

You can get an idea by clicking on the Options icon at the top of Ancestry's
enhanced viewer, and turning off the enhancement. Mainly it just changes the
contrast. On rare occasions I find the image is easier to read with the
enhancement turned off. I'm not sure that's all they do - I find when I deal
with a bad film with my microfilm scanner I can often improve the results by
fiddling with the brightness and contrast controls - they may be doing
similar things as they scan.
